Illstyle and Peace Comes to Village School

by Amanda G. and Sadie J.

IllStyle, a Hip-Hop group that gives a good message, came to Village on Monday. During the performance, the hip hop group showed different styles of dance and at the end they shared a very inspiring statement to the whole 6th grade.
¨They were trying to teach us that hip hop is not just dance but that it also has a cultural history behind it,¨ said Kate Dulac a 6th grade student at Village School. ¨They did a good job at teaching it, but it was was still fun at the same time.¨
We learned about different styles of hip hop: popping, locking, and breaking. Locking was created by Don Campbell.  Popping was invented by Boogaloo Sam, and breaking, we were taught at the assembly, was invented by Kool Herc, these names are all very interesting!
“The people had a good vibe, guys playing music, the other members of the group dancing. It was fun!” Says Trevor Paine, another 6th grade student at Village school. “I [can] see them performing on the streets in Boston,” he said.
Not everyone had this positive of an opinion. “I don't know if I would want to see it it outside of school,” said Maddison Walker. “It was enjoyable but it was also confusing,” she said.
The group is called Illstyle and they have been performing for quite a while now. They want to inspire people to always be positive. “You can do it too, and your dreams will definitely come true. We have become our dreams and so can you. Think positive and faith that will sail you through. Tests will come; hard work pays off, studying hard doesn't make you soft, stay focused and help a friend,” the group said as they closed out their  performance, smiling.

By Peyton D. and Nathan B. The chorus was held on Monday, December 18th at Veterans Middle school from 6:30-7:30. The fourth, fifth and sixth-grade chorus members, their parents and all the music teachers were at the concert. A chorus member, Peyton Downey, said, ‘‘It took the 6th grade a couple of months to perfect their songs, Honerot Halalu and Holiday Celebrations. It was fun to perform all our songs all together.’’ Each grade performed two songs and the whole group sang one together. At the end of the concert, there was a holiday sing-along for everyone to sing. The sixth-grade members sang Honerot Halalu and Holiday Celebrations and all the three grades together sang Mrs. Claus .

What is it like to be a Long Term Substitute?

By: Jack B. This year Ms. Harris took over for a fourth-grade teacher and is a long-term sub for fourth grade.  In October, Ms. Sweet went out and Ms. Harris came in as a long-term substitute. I asked her about being a long-term sub and how she started teaching and other questions. She said, “It is weird starting in a new class because I feel weird when I start anything new.” I went on and asked her about how she started teaching and she said that both of her parents were teachers and she thought that it would be fun working with kids. She also said that she started at Village School and that she wanted to teach for the rest of her life. She also said she would like to work with kids for the rest of her life if she couldn’t teach anymore. She said that teaching is her favorite job in the world and it would be fantastic to teach for the rest of her career.

The Movie Wonder Was Made Well

By: Lexi Fisichelli Wonder is a movie about a boy who has never looked ordinary since the day he was born. His mom has homeschooled him for his entire life. When his parents tell him that he is going to start middle school at a real school, he freaks out. They had to leave some things out of the movie that were kind of important in the book. One important thing they left out was how Auggie got a hearing aid. I think that the book was good because you could really use your imagination, but they both did very well. At Village School in Marblehead MA, every fourth grader reads the book, Wonder . Then last month, the movie Wonder came out. Samantha Roman, a sixth grader at the village school, has read the book and seen the movie. “I like the movie I thought they did good with it,” said Roman. She said that she liked how the book had sections with a different character's perspective every time. She also said that personally, she likes to read the book first then ...
